Neither of us could have ever imagined that John’s first visit to Brazil, to the colorful and joyful festival called Carnival, would end up in something else. However, when we were both least expecting it, life showed the magical power of fate and our paths changed forever!!!

We’ve been together since 2005 and after the intimate ceremony in the United States, we decided to have the official wedding in Brazil….

We are really excited about sharing this special day with you. Ilha bela has been a very special place in our history together, and we are really happy to plan the celebration of our big day on this beautiful tropical island.

2. ILHA BELA (BEAUTIFUL ISLAND)

Ilha bela is an archipelago located on the north coast of São Paulo and is an approximately 3 hour drive from the city. It’s one of the most well liked tourist destinations. It has clear and calm waters on the side facing the continent, and it has many beaches- some busy with bars and restaurants, and some deserted, tropical and remote. Water sports are a symbol of the island, which has become a sailor’s spot in the state and is the venue of the largest South American sailing competition every year.

Trails through preserved forest, beautiful waterfalls and excellent diving places, in addition to a sunset without equal, complement the list of attractions. Currently, the city’s economy is dedicated to tourism.

Vila is the main town on the island and has many restaurants, little stores, cafes and bars. São Sebastião is the nearest mainland city; a ferry from here is the only way to reach Ilha bela (it takes about 15 minutes).

Climate (March): The temperature stays between 25ºC - 35ºC. The climate is moderate and March is the dry season.

Castellanos Bay-A seaport, always good for surfing. Sometimes, you can see groups of dolphins swimming near tourists. It is located on the north side of Ilhabela.

Day trips to The Marine Reservation- Isla de las Cabras (Goats Island). In this reservation, the remains of some shipwrecks that took place in the island waters can be observed. Some of the shipwrecks are: Dentre Velásquez (1908), Darth (1884) and Aymoré (1920).

Trilla do Bonete Path-In this location, a traditional community of fishermen resides. Camping is allowed in the zone.

The most popular beaches:

-In the center
The beach of Itaguassu is situated next to an important avenue and a small port with anchored ships.
The beach of Pereque is close to an avenue and a bicycle path decorated with coconut palms.

-To the north:
The beach of Jabaquara is a remote 500 meter beach with calm and crystalline waters.
The beach of Da Forme, 150 meters long, is ideal for day trips. Its access is restricted to ships.
The beach of Do Poco, 50 meters long. It is an old beach, bordered by stones, with small waves. It is recommended for fishing and diving, and its access is restricted to ships.

-To the south:
The beach of Do Curral, with yellow sand.
The beach of Saco Do Sombrio is surrounded by vegetation and hills. Its transparent waters were a shelter for English, French and Dutch pirates of the 16^th and 17th centuries.

• PRACTICALITIES
  

On Ilha Bela most hotels, restaurants and shops accept credit cards…although there is not an official place for money exchange. It is safer to bring some Brazilian Reais from the airport in São Paulo – exchange some money just after landing. ($1.00 is currently equal to R$1,68 reais)

There are some ATM machines on Ilha Bela for international cash advances but is better not to take any risks because they don’t always work.

IMPORTANT- The mosquitoes, known as “borrachudos”, have been substantially reduced with the urban growth of the city, but they still show up – mainly in locations away from the city, at the end of the day. It is a good idea to take insect repellents, especially in outings to Jabaquara and Castelhanos.

3. ACCOMODATION-TRANSPORTATION

We are planning to stay, during the wedding weekend, at the Hotel Real Villa Bella www.realvillabella.com.br - it’s the hotel of the event (so very close and easy). The hotel is located near Vila and close to the charming little stores, cafes, restaurants and bars. Calm beaches such Santa Tereza and Prainha are nearby.

After the weekend we are planning to move to a different hotel on the island called DPNY www.dpnybeach.com.br. We may also take a trip to Parati (2 hours driving from Ilha Bela), which is a very beautiful and unique beach near Rio. Our plans are still “in work”- we will keep the site updated. Everyone is welcome to stay and join us for the whole week!

Wedding Day

General wedding attire – The motto is to feel comfortable (I hope is going to be hot and sunny! ). It is not a black tie occasion, our wedding day will have a very informal atmosphere and we would like our guests to be relaxed and feel comfortable.

Everyone can leave the tié and suits in the closet. As a suggestion, you may want to wear soft colors, like pastels, especially of because the hot weather.

As a suggestion;

Women- Cocktail dresses, and remember the wedding will take place on a deck over the water, so be careful of high heels.

Unfortunately there is no nursery at the hotel, so if the kids decide they’ve had enough, there isn’t really anywhere to accommodate them.

12. INFORMATION FOR FAMILY & FRIENDS TRAVELING FROM U.S.

First, thanks for coming!

This section is to help with planning your trip and give a rough idea of the costs. We realize it is not an inexpensive trip, and hope you can make it. Please remember- we don’t have a gift registry or any gift expectations- your presence is the gift!

Overview:

Ilha Bela is roughly halfway between Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro, on the Atlantic coast of Brazil. We are planning on staying at the hotel near the wedding location over the weekend (March 27-30). After that, we will be moving to a different hotel on the island, and possibly going to the town of Parati (a couple hours north up the coast) for a few days. We’ll keep the website updated with our plans. Everyone is welcome to stay on the island (and travel to Parati) with us for the week following the wedding- in fact we’re hoping for this. It’s a long trip to Brazil and a weekend is not enough.

We are trying to make the logistics of the trip as easy as possible for everyone. Of course, for the more adventurous- feel free to head out on your own anytime, Dani put a lot of information on the website of things to go see or do in Brazil. Having been to Brazil a few times myself, I can say it is not the easiest country to get around in for English speakers, but it is a huge country with amazing places and friendly people.

One of the big things we’re trying to do is setup a bus or several large vans to transport everyone from the Sao Paulo area to Ilha Bela (once we’re all on the island we’re home free). Side note: getting to the island does involve a ~3 hour drive and a 15 minute ferry ride. Dani’s found a company that will be able to do this. This does mean (for those who want to do this) that we’ll need to sync up the arrivals- see the “getting there” section for the plan.

Here’s a planning checklist of things to remember/do if you do plan to come. There is more info on these in the follow-on sections. And, if you have any questions or concerns, email Dani or me!

* Get plane tickets to Sao Paulo (the airport is known as Cumbica and Guarulhos, the airport code is GRU)

* Get a visa to visit Brazil (you’ll need a passport first if you don’t have one)

* Make hotel reservations for the wedding weekend in Ilha Bela

* Staying in Ilha Bela for the week and/or travelling to Parati? Let us know!

Getting There

Direct flights to Sao Paulo leave primarily from New York and Miami, although I’ve sometime seen them from other cities as well. I would recommend a straight flight if possible- from NY it’s about 10 hours, from Miami about 8. Unfortunately, this is the expensive part… I’ve paid anywhere between 1000$ and 1500$ for a round trip ticket. The airport to fly into is called Guarulhos (sometimes also called Cumbica), the airport code is GRU. This is the international airport in Sao Paulo. The airport itself is nice – there are restaurants in the international arrival area and it is easily navicable. Flights from the US typically are overnight- ie leave late at night and arrive early in the morning.

There are a couple options (for those wanting to hop the caravan to Ilha Bela). Please, let us know which one you prefer before getting the plane tickets. Dani is organizing the van company to do the pickups and we’ll need to do some planning to pull this off:

#1) Leave late Wednesday (3/25) from the US, arriving in Brazil on Thursday morning 3/26. From there, take a cab to a hotel (hotel TBD) relatively close to the airport and stay there Thursday night. On Friday morning, the vans/bus picks everyone up at the hotel and we caravan down to Ilha Bela. The advantage here is that there is a rest day following the long flight, and if anyone’s plane is late we have some buffer.

#2) Leave late Thursday (3/26) from the US, arriving in Brazil on Friday morning 3/27. Hang out at the airport on Friday, and the vans/bus pick up at the airport and drive down to Ilha Bela. The advantage here is one less vacation day to use, however it’s a lot of continuous traveling (overnight flight plus ride down to Ilha Bela).

Our plan will be to have someone bi-lingual to assist with the travel and getting everyone on the vans (probably one of Dani’s friends). Also, the van company has some English speaking drivers. The one way cost for the vans looks to be about 50$ per person.

Getting a Visa

Brazil requires US citizens to get a tourist visa in order to enter the country. This is very important- they will turn you around at the airport if you don’t have one. To get a visa, you can start with the website of thee Brazilian embassy/consulate nearest you, and with enough lead time try and do it by mail – the link is a list of consulates. You can google the specific consulate to get more information on how to get the visa. http://www.consulatebrazil.org/jurisd.htm

Generally, the visa needs to be used within 90 days of the date of issuance. It is then good for 5 years after that. It looks like the current price is ~130$. Also, you don’t want to cut this too close (don’t wait until the last minute)… the consulates don’t do same day visa’s and they don’t lose any sleep if you miss your flight due to not having a visa.

If you go to the consulate in person, make sure to read the required documentation needed to get the visa before travelling to the consulate- these may vary a little from consulate to consulate but generally:

- *Need your passport, and it can’t expire within 6 months of your planned arrival date in Brazil

- *Need a copy of the tickets or the intinerary

- *Need to fill out the visa application form (available on consulate websites)

- *Need a passport style 2”x2” photo

Getting Back Home

This will really depend where we end up going, and who comes along. The company that Dani is working with on the vans has transportation options- we’ll just need to coordinate and see when people are planning on leaving. These plans will evolve as we figure out who will be able to come and what the travel dates are. But, we will get everyone home!

2. ILHA BELA

Entre o céu e o mar um capricho da natureza; em terra, o cenário é a mata com sua exuberante flora e fauna, suas maravilhosas praias e inúmeras trilhas que nos levam a refrescantes banhos de cachoeira.

Também conhecida como Capital da Vela, Ilha Bela é um arquipélago localizado no Litoral Norte do Estado de São Paulo, com 340 quilômetros quadrados de área e cerca de 140 quilômetros de costa. Cerca de 85% do território do arquipélago encontra-se dentro do Parque Estadual de Ilhabela, o que garantirá a preservação permanente de um dos últimos e mais belos remanescentes da Mata Atlântica - declarada reserva da biosfera pela Unesco -, e que pode ser conhecida através de dezenas de trilhas.

Além de 40 praias e cerca de 400 cachoeiras, o arquipélago possui cerca de 70 quilômetros de costões rochosos virgens - somente accessíveis pelo mar -, que se transformaram em um verdadeiro cemitério de navios e que fazem a maravilha dos modernos mergulhadores.

O sistema de ventos e correntes existentes no canal que separa o arquipélago do continente, transformaram o local em verdadeira raia de competições de vela e esportes náuticos.

Baia de Castelhanos
Porto de barcos. A praia é muito procurada pelos surfistas. Às vezes, é possível ver os golfinhos se exibindo para os turistas. Está localizada no norte de Ilhabela.

Mergulho na Reserva Marinha da Ilha das Cabras
Dentro desta reserva, podem ser vistos os restos de alguns dos naufrágios que aconteceram perto da ilha, como o dos navios Dentre, Velásquez (1908), Darth (1884) e Aimoré (1920).

Caminho Trilha do Bonete
Existe uma vila de pescadores que está isolada da vida moderna. Para quem quiser acampar, o camping selvagem é permitido.

Praias Destacadas
Centro
Praia Itaguassu: está localizada ao lado de uma avenida movimentada. Tem numerosos barcos ancorados.

Praia do Perequê: está localizada junto à avenida e ciclovia. Tem coqueiros.

Norte
Praia de Jabaquara: tem 500 metros de praia primitiva e quase deserta, com águas calmas e cristalinas
Praia de Fome: com 150 metros de comprimento. É ideal para a prática do mergulho. O acesso debe ser através de barco.
Praia do Poco: com 50 metros de praia primitiva e quase deserta. Tem ondas pequenas e muitas pedras. É ideal para a prática do mergulho e da pesca. O acesso deve ser através de barco.

Sul
Praia Feiticeira: tem 250 metros e é muito freqüentada.
Praia do Curral: é muito freqüentada. Tem uma faixa de areia amarela.
Praia Bonete: é muito visitada pelos surfistas e tem 400 metros de comprimento. O acesso é por lancha ou trilha desde a Cascata de Laje.
Praia Saco do Sombrio: está rodeada por serras e vegetação. Tem águas transparentes, e foi refúgio de piratas ingleses, holandeses e franceses nos séculos XVI e XVII.

IMPORTANTE- Os borrachudos tem substancialmente reduzido com o crescimento urbano da cidade, mas eles ainda aparecem, normalmente em praias mais afastadas e no final da tarde, portanto não esqueça de levar o repelente de SP.

3. DIREÇÕES PARA ILHA BELA

Seguir pela Rodovia Ayrton Senna por 60km, continuar pela Rodovia Carvalho Pinto por mais 30km. Após o pedágio e o posto policial, seguir pela saída para Ilhabela, Caraguatatuba e Ubatuba. Pela Rodovia dos Tamoios, seguir mais 65km. Chegando em Caraguatatuba, na rotatória seguir pela direita em direção a São Sebastião. Após 27km, no final da avenida principal da cidade, seguir pela esquerda onde placa indica FILA DA BALSA. Seguir mais 800m e você estará no embarque da balsa. A balsa atravessa o canal cada 30 minutos e o tempo de travessia é de 15 minutos. O Trecho São Paulo - Ilhabela tem aproximadamente 210km e é percorrido em 3h30m. A empresa de ônibus Litorânea faz o trajeto São Paulo - Ilhabela (telefone: 0xx11 6221 0244)

Para quem quiser, duas dicas: a hora marcada é uma boa atitude em alta temporada e feriados. Você pode marcar sua hora pelo fone 0800 704 55 10. Fora de temporada, o uso deste serviço não é necessário.Para alugar veículos, aconselhamos fazê-lo em cidades grandes, como São Paulo ou Rio de Janeiro.

O Hotel Real Villa Bella situa-se próximo ao Centro Comercial e histórico de Ilhabela, carinhosamente chamada de Vila. Em suas ruas estreitas e charmosas encontram-se lojas, cafés, bares e restaurantes. Praias tranquilas como Santa Tereza e Prainha são algumas das opções perto do Hotel.

Como a festa será na praia, a intenção é se divertir, celebrar o amor, comer, beber e dançar, muuuito. Nós estamos muito animados para curtir esse momento inesquecível com as pessoas que mais amamos.

E o mais importante; não tem tempo limite de término!!!…Para os mais corajosos, terão a oportunidade de ver um lindo nascer do sol.

6. O QUE VESTIR.

Os covidados poderão deixar os ternos, gravatas e longos no closet. Sem perder o glamour, claro.

Mulheres- O evento pede vestidos tipo longetes, leves e sandálias com salto não tão fino (para não enroscar no deck).

Atendendo pedidos, segue algumas sugestões de vestidos...Mas lembrando, são apenas sugestões.

E tem também os longos estampados que são super confortáveis e elegantes.

Homens- Calça em tons claros, e camisa. E não precisa ser sapato de couro fechado, pode ser sapatenis ou outro sapato mais casual.

Guidda's- Fica na Avenida Força Expedicionária Brasileira (a mesma do píer 151), nº13, na Vila. Tel- (12) 3896-3479.

La Ville. Ele fica ao lado da igreja matriz, ou seja, na vila, sendo também próximo do píer 151. Fica na Rua Washington Luís nº25. Tel- (12) 3896-3310.

Salomé- É um pouquinho mais distante. Fica na Rua Santa Tereza nº20, na Vila.
Tel- (12) 3896-5272.

7. CRIANÇAS

Crianças são bem-vindas para o evento, porém, todos sabem que Ilha Bela é um famoso roteiro de lua de mel, pela sua beleza e romantismo, portanto, se os pais quiserem vir sozinhos para curtir a festa até tarde (e a Ilha) sem se preocupar com os pimpolhos, os noivos não acharão ruim. E infelizmente , o local da festa não dispõem de berçário e trocador dificultando a vida das mães com neném de colo.

Como será um casamento longe de São Paulo, nós realmente precisávamos saber quem virá para a festa, pois não queremos que falte absolutamente nada. Sendo assim, por favor, confirme o mais breve possível.

Os convites são para os convidados. Gostaríamos que cada um de vocês se sentisse parte importante deste momento, e esta foi a forma que encontramos de homenageá-los, com uma linda festa, numa cidade que a gente adora, de frente pro mar...Começa antes do pôr-do-sol e termina…, bem, não tem hora pra terminar.

Nós não esperamos presentes de casamento; sua presença no casamento será o suficiente. Nós convidamos vocês porque queremos MUITO que façam parte do nosso dia feliz, não pelos presentes que poderíamos ganhar, especialmente porque nós somos conscientes e sabemos que só a viajem para ir ao casamento já é um presente em si.
